When we didn’t receive all the love we needed as children, one thing that happens in our adulthood is that we project edited versions of ourselves to the world.
These versions are based on what we’ve been made to believe is most lovable or safe about us. Basically, we present parts of ourselves that we think will be loved and accepted, and hide and suppress the parts that we feel won’t. We create these projections to protect us – from abandonment, and the loss of love. But they actually end up hurting us. They are not benign – to our health, or our happiness.
